ACA 2012 Seminar Series
On an annual basis, the ACA conducts a national series of one day seminars in Australia and New Zealand. In 2012 this series will be entitled ‘Corrosion & Risk Management’ in Australia and 'Corrosion & Risk Management in the Coastal Environment' in New Zealand.

Corrosion & Risk Management
Managing and mitigating the risk corrosion poses to plant and equipment can be achieved through maintaining a management plan that employs a regime of inspections and risk assessments. The purpose of a risk assessment is to determine the condition of a piece of plant or equipment and evaluate the likelihood that it will fail or suffer damage due to the onset of corrosion. A measure of severity of outcome due to this damage may be established and a matrix of risk and associated options to mitigate, manage or remove this risk be developed. Corrosion risk mitigation may be as simple as altering materials or applying a coating. Managing the risk is done through implementing a monitoring and inspection regime.

Corrosion & Risk Management in the Coastal Environment
Many cities and towns in New Zealand are situated within a few kilometres of the coast and therefore most industries have to deal with the various problems of corrosion this proximity initiates. Many of us are aware of the risk of the damage corrosion poses to infrastructure, plant and equipment. What is less considered is the threat this corrosion also poses to human safety. Following recent events in Christchurch, there is now a renewed focus on asset integrity.
Managing and mitigating corrosion effects can be achieved through developing and maintaining an asset management plan which actively monitors asset and equipment condition. An evaluation may then be made of the business/human cost of failure and strategies formulated. Corrosion risk mitigation tactics can vary from simply altering a material, applying protective coatings or cathodic protection, through to a mix of technical and management solutions.
