Event Type: Petroleum & Chemical Process Industries Technical Group / Oil & Gas Industry Mid-Year Meeting
Event Date: 30-31 May 2012
Event Location: Brisbane
Event Introduction: There is no doubt that corrosion is the hidden enemy to the Oil & Gas industry as it can result in consequences unforseen and fatal. Corrosion can erode revenue exponentially if its potential effects are not considered and its effect treated correctly. In addition, damage resulting from corrosion in this industry can impact upon human safety and cause enormous harm to the environment.
The ACA in conjunction with the industry group Oil & Gas Corrosion is conducting a two day seminar so that these and other related issues may be explored. In order to foster and maintain confidentiality and open discussion, the first day shall be restricted to personnel working within the Oil & Gas industry only. The second day shall be open to any person concerned with aspects of corrosion in this industry. It is expected that by holding a joint event such as this, an increased understanding of corrosion shall be gained and a greater collaboration between industry professionals will be encouraged.
Day 1 eligibility - Delegates will be restricted to personnel working as direct employees of oil and gas companies and contractors who are fully embedded with one such organisation and whose attendance has been proposed by that organisation. There will be an industry dinner hosted by the OGC on the Wednesday night for delegates attending both days. Those people eligible to attend Day 1 should complete the attached registration form indicating full or part registration, the nominating organisation (where required) and availability for the dinner.
Corrosion Prevention and Coating Durability
Event Type: Coatings Technical Group Mid-Year Meeting
Event Date: 6-7 June 2012
Event Location: Sydney
Event Introduction: The use of protective coatings across multiple industries, including oil and gas, mining and infrastructure, is a widespread and extremely effective approach to controlling and preventing corrosion. The durability of protective coatings varies enormously with modern protective coatings capable of providing very high levels of corrosion protection and durability even in the most extreme operating conditions - such as high temperature, chemical contact, severe environments and often combinations of all of these.
However the successful performance of protective coatings in any environment or operating condition depends on more than just the chemicals in the can! The final coating performance is only realised when cured as a dry film on a surface, and the coating contractor plays a vital part in achieving this. Increasingly, coating manufacturers and coating contractors are being required to provide longer lasting products and longer warranties. Subsequently the training of coating contractors by both coatings manufacturers and industry bodies is more relevant and important than ever before.
For the coating application contractor keeping abreast of the technological advances is coupled with the onerous duty to comply with ever changing work place safety and environmental requirements and the increasing liabilities in an ever more litigious society.
This seminar aims to explore these issues and share with the audience selected topics to reflect the importance of appropriate coating system selection and contractor compliance and education to achieve good corrosion prevention outcomes.
Venue and Accommodation: Courtyard by Marriott, 7-11 Talavera Road, North Ryde.
To book a rate of $260.00 per room per night including 1 buffet breakfast, please follow this personalised link which has a group code (ACAACAA) already typed in.

Concrete Repair and Protection: Some Recent Experiences
Event Type: Concrete Structures & Buildings Technical Group Mid-Year Event
Event Date: 21 June 2012
Event Location: Newcastle
Event Introduction: Asset owners and managers are required to maintain reinforced and prestressed concrete structures and buildings for longer periods and with tighter and tighter budgets. Many structures and buildings are required for many years and even decades beyond their design lives because of longer operating requirements, increased life of mine and the like.
Concrete repair and protection is becoming more prevalent and there have been many advances in available materials, technologies and approaches in recent times. Consultants, material suppliers, contractors and asset owners all have stories to tell in this regard. Practical examples and case studies are warranted.
The Australasian Corrosion Association’s Concrete Structures and Buildings Technical Group is hosting a seminar to enhance corrosion awareness and to encourage dialogue on the most recent technologies and approaches available for the repair and protection of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures and buildings.
The seminar will be of value to structure and building owners and managers, engineers, architects, contractors, suppliers and researchers involved in optimising operations to ensure structural safety and availability is not compromised by corrosion and deterioration.
Corrosion Issues, Prevention and Asset Rehabilitation in the Water and Waste Water Industry
Event Type: Water & Water Treatment Technical Group Mid-Year Event
Event Date: 26 June 2012
Event Location: Adelaide
Event Introduction: The cost of corrosion in the water industry in Australia is estimated to be more than $900 million (AUD) annually.
Corrosion in the water industry occurs in both water and waste water networks. This corrosion affects different items of infrastructure including pipelines, pumps, valves, tanks as well as treatment and filtration plants. In addition to this, a large amount of water and waste water networks in Australia are reaching the end of their original design lives. To manage this issue, adequate assessment, prevention and rehabilitation methods need to be employed.
Different methods are employed to prevent corrosion on these items including protective coatings, corrosion resistant materials, cathodic protection systems and correct designs to help ensure that items achieve a long life.
A challenge for water utilities lies in how best to plan for asset renewal as well as the best methods to repair and replace assets as they reach the end of their lives.
This seminar aims to explore some of the ways in which utilities can plan for asset rehabilitation and replacement as well as different methods of corrosion prevention used within the water and waste water industry.

Corrosion and Infrastructure Sustainability in the Mining Industry
Event Type: Mining Industry Technical Group Mid-Year Event
Event Date: 27 July 2012 & 17 August 2012
Event Location: Mackay & Singleton/Muswellbrook
Event Introduction: Sustainability has become a fashionable term in recent times and is at risk of being misused. However, it is at the core of mining activities and there is an increasing trend in the industry, particularly at operating mines, to have a proactive program of remediation to mine site assets.
Corrosion and the subsequent degradation of plant and equipment will work against process and environmental sustainability, so corrosion management strategies are a critical step in a sustainable mining industry. Corrosion mitigation can be addressed at all phases of mining – design, fabrication and operation (and where relevant, decommissioning) – and an integrated approach helps to ensure a positive impact.
The Australasian Corrosion Association's Mining Industry Technical Group is hosting a seminar to encourage dialogue on the various aspects of efficiently mitigating corrosion, with a special focus on the peculiar demands imposed by mining and mineral processing activities.
The seminar will be of value to anyone involved in mine planning through to mining operations, ensuring that these activities continue to provide benefit to the wider Australian and New Zealand communities.
