What’s happening in Cairns?

Cairns Regional Council and other asset owners with waterfront infrastructure are investing in construction, redevelopment and maintenance projects. Durability and sustainability feature heavily in the project requirements and long-term corrosion protection is an important part of those requirements. Navigating through the implementation of appropriate corrosion protection solutions can be challenging and the Australasian Corrosion Association has determined that Cairns is therefore an ideal location to host its annual corrosion conference and to give asset owners an opportunity to connect with experts in our industry.

  • Cairns has a strong ship maintenance and steel fabrication capability.
  • Cairns hosts a fleet of luxury yacht, commercial fishing, and reef tourism vessels.
  • Cairns has a Royal Australian Navy base (HMAS Cairns) and is the home port for a number of Australian Border Force vessels.
  • The Cairns region has a substantial sugar industry, including materials handling and export facilities.
  • The wider North Queensland region is home to some of the largest coal export facilities. (mainly centred around Mackay).
