For decorative brassware, try to avoid greasy finger prints, as the fatty acids in the skin are corrosive. Also, the burnt gases from kerosene heaters may cause rapid tarnishing of brass.
Maintain your home appliances and fixtures by cleaning with vinegar, using cold tap water for aluminum items, keeping stainless steel dry, avoiding mixed metals in plumbing, and treating rusted parts with penetrating oil.
