Wednesday 3rd October, NSW Branch hosted their annual Concrete & Cathodic Protection Technical Seminar.
The event was chaired by Branch President Mr. Alan Bird, with opening remarks from the ACA’s CEO Richard Reilly.
The event was highlighted by a 3 speaker technical program. Dr. Mohammad Ali, Philip Karajali and Atef Cheaitani, all well versed and highly experienced in this field. They presented various case studies on performance of cathodic protection systems and concrete repairs, including what happens (corrosion-wise and when) following cathodic protection systems being switched off for an extended period, and the effectiveness of protection systems and thoughts on how to improve concrete repairs and CP.
Interesting topics given that different techniques offered varying levels of protection and life. As is always the case, the technical program was followed by healthy and robust discussion from the floor. In addition to presentation-specific questions, several relevant topics were also raised including: corrosion rates in concrete, concrete mixes, repair grouts, frequency of inspections, alternate materials and the old chestnut “why aren’t contractors given enough time to tender these works?”
The event was very well attended, with over 60 delegates, a fantastic turnout from Branch members. Feedback was uniformly positive, and the Branch is now arranging to take the same presentation to a number of key infrastructure asset owners in Sydney, including RMS.
The Branch would like to thank their event sponsors PCTE, Parchem, Omniflex, DuoGuard and Corrosion Electronics for their on-going support.
We look forward to seeing you at future events. Jim Galanos
