The ACA’s annual premier coatings event occurred on 4 April and was held at the Royal Society of Victoria in Melbourne’s CBD.
The event was a great success with a mixture of presentations ranging from future trends for the coating industry, current product development plans, case study’s on corrosion issues and remediation methods & information on concrete assessment and preparation.

Paint Coating Failures: Understanding Complex Causes
There are dozens of different ways that a paint coating can fail prematurely. Many of these are due to applicator, design or fabrication errors and can be detected, analysed and repaired relatively simply and quickly. However, other failures can require an in-depth understanding of coating properties, environmental factors and breakdown mechanisms. This presentation looks at some of these more complex failures and why they happen. High humidity and dew point conditions can cause blushing or blooming as well as delamination, and arise because of interrelated climatic and weather conditions. Chalking and colour loss arise from UV breakdown of coating binder or pigment or both, but rainfall and colour are also important factors. Premature breakdown of paint over galvanizing can be due to improper coating selection or surface preparation, but can arise from incorrect film thickness. Osmotic blistering is a well-known failure mechanism, but arises due to a complex interaction between contamination, coating type and thickness and environment. Understanding coating failure mechanism can assist the specifier, applicator or inspector in achieving maximum durability from a coating system.

Failures in Concrete Protection
This presentation will cover various concrete protective coating and lining system failure issues for consideration, discussion and prevention in the future. These will be presented from a manufacturer’s, contractor’s and consultant’s perspective.
Understanding and recognising failure mechanisms in concrete protection and lining is a fundamental pre-requisite to determining the problem of defects encountered in providing adequate protection and required years of service life.
We will look at the failure mechanisms in concrete protection and will cover topics such as causes and mechanisms of system deterioration and causes of system failure. We will review the protection of concrete structures with coverage of guidelines for remediating and protecting concrete structures, the methods of protection and the durability of remediated and protected concrete.

Ulladulla Lighthouse – A success story
RemedyAP was involved in refurbishment of the Ulladulla lighthouse throughout 2017/2018. This presentation will focus on the heritage, lead abatement and corrosion issues faced through the project with a particular focus on how the team overcame these obstacles including some unique solutions.

Phillip Island Bridge Guardrails – A 20 Year Case Study
This presentation will cover a successful case study of a 3 coat paint system in a coastal environment. It will look at processes that were followed, learnings that could have lead to improvements in the result and future maintenance recommendations to improve the life of the asset.

Keeping Coating Inspection Simple – Recurring Refurbishment of Sydney’s Olympic Sprinter Statue
In the period up to and during the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, three statues of athletes adorned the Centrepoint Tower, which dominates the Sydney CBD sky-line. Sculpted by artist Dominique Sutton from thin steel straps, the statues are space frames up to 15 metres tall and were designed for maximum light reflectance when illuminated at night.
During 2002, the statues were taken down for refurbishment and relocation. Inspection revealed widespread corrosion and paint failure, and after a thorough refurbishment including a total re-blast and repaint, the Sprinter was repositioned at Sydney’s Olympic Park.
During 2018, it was decided to again move the Sprinter, to an elevated position (Mt Olympus) located beside the M4 Freeway at Homebush, the gateway to Olympic Park. This also included installing internal and external lighting to allow targeted promotions for sports events being staged at the former Olympic Stadium.
Re-inspection after dismantling revealed the Sprinter to still be in very good condition. Another refurbishment was implemented to provide another 25 years durability, with most of the coating left in place for overcoating, together with installation of LED strip lighting and redesign of the support framework. This was performed mainly by the rigging contractor who carried out all of the previous installations.
A coating inspection regime was designed and implemented, based mainly on visual assessment, consistent with the main principles of maintenance painting of a structure with complex geometry and with pre-existing paints of variable thickness. This paper summarises both of the refurbishment programs and illustrates the different coating inspection approaches for the two types of work conducted.

The NCC 2019 – risks for consumers with structural steel coatings
What happens if builders follow the requirements of the National Construction Code 2019 for the corrosion protection of structural steel?
We’ve all heard and seen the issues with non-conforming building products – from burning buildings, to faulty wires, to glass breaking, but fortunately corrosion of steel takes time and doesn’t usually lend itself to a televised spectacular failure – unless you have a verandah party. This presentation will discuss aspects of mandatory minimum corrosion protection shown in volume 2 of the 2019 edition of the NCC, show that it is a ticking time bomb and provide some suggested solutions. We’ll also make a case for action by members of the coatings industry to fix this long held anomaly.

Rusty Bottoms: A Case Study
This presentation highlights the need to provide a barrier coating between galvanized steel and wet cementitious materials.
It includes a case study of the premature failure of protective coating on the base plates of highway guardrail on 8 new expressway bridges, totaling >1.5km in length.
The results of the failure investigation and repair method adopted are presented and mitigation recommendations in current guides are reviewed.
