How Surface Heat on Steels can Lead to Premature Failure and Corrosion
Barry Robinson is a tradesman Toolmaker, NZCE in Mechanical Engineering, and Marine Engineer 3rd class.
Barry’s working life has been in the heavy engineering industry, specialising in forging, heat treatment, failure analysis and training engineers on best practice to avoid failure of metals. Barry is also heavily involved in the 3D printing of 316L and 15-5-PH stainless steels, Inconel 718 and Titanium 6-4 alloys.
In addition to his role as GM of SAFE Ltd (South Auckland Forging Engineering) Barry is the Chairman of the Maintenance Engineering Society of NZ (MESNZ).
The technical discussion will include examples of failures attributable to heat applied to steels during some form of post-processing such as grinding, gas cutting, plasma cutting, laser cutting, welding, gas torch heating, and even heavy machining operations. Of particular note is the use of heat to remove old coatings, and the sensitization of austenitic stainless steel.There will be ample time available for Q&A and discussion involving the audience.
The technical presentation will be followed by a brief Annual General Meeting of ACA Auckland Division. All attendees are invited to attend this.
