Overview

In recent decades, our appreciation for the ubiquity, diversity, and significance of microbes has grown exponentially. These ancient life forms have thrived for billions of years, adapting to extreme and ever-changing environments. Advanced genomics has revealed their omnipresence, with microbes constituting the majority of Earth’s biomass. Remarkably, a mere gram of soil harbors as many bacteria as there are people on our planet. While microbes are essential for life, their natural processes of degradation can lead to undesirable effects, including material decay and premature industrial equipment failure. However, understanding this microbial world is not only crucial for averting harm but also for harnessing their potential. Microbes hold the key to healthier living, clean energy solutions, efficient waste management, and numerous sustainable applications.  Join us in this presentation as we delve into the extraordinary machinery of microbes and explore their profound impact on materials and sustainable development.

This is a joint technical event by Materials Australia and the Australasian Corrosion Association. Networking drinks sponsored by TECHT.
