The ACA commissioned this report to investigate the impact corrosion has on a range of Australia’s and New Zealand’s national infrastructure assets. In producing and sharing this report, the ACA is aiming to elevate the discussion around the timely, cost-effective prevention of corrosion while highlighting the annual financial impact corrosion has on our national assets.

Wednesday evening June 24th saw over 60 corrosion enthusiasts gather to witness amazing footage captured by Chris and Allison Selman by whom have cleverly created a documentary called The Wreck Man. The story of Dr. Ian MacLeod, maritime archaeologist, and shipwreck conservator. In 2004 Dr Ian MacLeod was awarded the Corrosion Medal, a recognition bestowed by the ACA for his outstanding scientific and technical work in the field of corrosion in Australasia. Whilst in 2020 for his significant service to the museum and galleries sector Dr Ian was recognised with the medal of the Order of Australia.

This webinar features speakers discussing some of the key challenges that corrosion can present and the methods that can be used to protect key structures. Organised by the ACA VIC Branch, discussions include the work undertaken to prevent the degradation of iconic Australian landmarks including Laser Cleaning using powerful ultrashort Pulse lasers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge from Dr. Ludovic Rapp (Laser Physics Centre - Australian National University and CP based Repair of the Sydney Opera House from Ian Godson (Infracorr).

The marine environment is one of the harshest settings in terms of causing the corrosion of metal structures and components. The webinar organised by the Victorian Branch of the Australasian Corrosion Association focuses on marine coatings and technology to minimise problems caused by the corrosion of marine structures. We heard from three leading industry experts, Peter Dove (GHD), Kyle Fortune (Denso) and David Anderson (UCC) on issues and recent advances in this important area.

The Australian Pipelines and Gas Association and the The Australasian Corrosion Association have joined together to host a technical seminar to discuss the challenges and solutions for preventing corrosion in pipelines, some of our most vital infrastructure. This hybrid event will feature 8 guest presentations, headlined by Keynote Speaker Kevin Garrity, of Mears Integrity Solutions (USA), focusing on technologies such as materials selection, coatings and cathodic protection used to attain the desired design life of our assets will be discussed. Speakers will share their experience and those of others they have learned from, and include case studies in their presentations.
