Over the last few years, ASI has invested heavily in the groundwork necessary to offer a range of solutions for improved steelwork compliance to industry. A number of these solutions are relevant to ACA members, including:
- The new AS/NZS 5131 ‘Structural steelwork – Fabrication and erection’. This new Standard was published in December 2016 and includes a section on corrosion protection. For those involved in structural steelwork protection, this is a must-have reference.
- The new ‘National Structural Steelwork Specification’ (NSSS) and ‘Standard Drawing Notes’, which sit on top of AS/NZS 5131 are available for free download. NATSPEC were part of the peer review for this, and subsequently updated their own specification suite, which was published in April. ASI is strongly encouraging the industry to adopt either the NSSS or NATSPEC specifications. Apart from improved compliance outcomes, the ensuing level of rationalisation and standardisation across the industry will result in enormous efficiency gains.
- Details of the ‘National Structural Steelwork Compliance Scheme’ (NSSCS), which includes 3rd party certification of fabricators is available here. ASI is strongly suggesting to engineers that they should include the nomination of 3rd party certification to the NSSCS in their specifications (see the NSSS for suitable wording). Ultimately, it helps to minimise risk not only for engineers but for all members of the supply chain.
This flyer outlines AS/NZS 5131, the NSSS and the NSSCS. This document, along with a number of other resources, are freely available from ASI website at http://steel.org.au/key-issues/compliance. The ACA encourages you and your staff to make themselves aware of these resources.
Finally, the initiatives and tools that ASI have created represent a significant body of work by the industry for the industry. I would ask for your help to disseminate this awareness to your colleagues, clients and contractors. The maximum benefit will come from effective knowledge transfer, for which we need industry help.
