Presentation Title: Challenging the Myths in CP: Separating Accepted Belief from Technical Reality
Abstract: Cathodic protection is sometimes viewed as a mix of technical judgement, inherited practice and accepted industry wisdom. However, much of what is repeated, taught or assumed does not always align with field reality or the original intent behind the methods. This presentation examines the evolution of key ideas, interpretations and practices within the CP industry, and considers how misunderstandings can become embedded over time. Topics include the origins and development of DCVG surveys, the divergence between original intent and current practice, onshore and offshore CP design and criteria, and common misconceptions around AC corrosion and stray current effects across sectors ranging from boating to oil and gas. The presentation will highlight examples where incomplete or incorrect information has been widely accepted, eventually becoming treated as standard practice.
