Overview
The AMPP Cathodic Protection Level 2 – Technician (CP2) course provides intermediate level training in the theoretical and practical aspects of cathodic protection. The course
also explains and provides hands-on training in advanced level field-testing, troubleshooting, and data interpretation via a practical lab.

Who should attend
Technicians and Engineers involved with executing, supervising, and/or analysing the results of field tests for CP system troubleshooting and performance evaluation. This certification
is designed for individuals who either have a engineering/scientific background with some practical experience or who have extensive field experience with some technical background.

Prerequisites:

Required:
A knowledge of the following is required for understanding the material in this course:

Algebra and geometry
Electrochemistry: theory including electrochemical and galvanic series;
Corrosion theory including polarization under different conditions;
Electricity: basic electrical laws, series and parallel circuits;
Cathodic protection: fundamentals, criteria, sacrificial and impressed current equipment including troubleshooting;
Stray current interference, primarily related to underground pipelines.
Testing: including voltmeters, ammeters, shunts (and calculations), ohmmeters, reference electrodes (and conversions), isolation and soil resistivity.

Applicants not having the below knowledge and training are encouraged to attend the applicable course(s) before registering for this course.

A comprehensive knowledge of electrochemistry, electricity, electrical laws, series and parallel circuits, meter operation, and CP fundamentals are necessary for understanding the material in this course.

Course learning objectives

Test and troubleshoot rectifier component parts
Perform simulated CP related field tests (including interrupted structure-to-electrolyte potentials, current requirement, continuity, shorted road/railroad casing and, layer soil resistivity tests) and evaluate the results
Perform tests to verify the presence of stray current interference (primarily related to underground pipelines) and recommend method(s) to mitigate the interference
Conduct and interpret different current measurements
Interpret voltage (IR) free readings, polarization formation and decay tests
Maintain records, including data plotting and analysis
Summarize induced AC voltage on pipelines and the methods of mitigation
Purpose and uses of corrosion coupon test stations
Depending on the jurisdiction review code CP criteria requirements related to CP

Course completion

Renewal requirements

An approved recertification application is required every 3 years. The work experience requirement for renewals for all certifications is one and half (1.5) years for the most recent three (3) year period. Additionally, some certifications have other requirements related to responsibility in charge.

Your work experience and PDH’s will be submitted as part of your renewal application but you can input PDH’s at any time.
